CUPID'S ARROW

I shot an arrow into the air, it fell to earth I knew not where.  This is the first line of a very popular Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem and one of my favorites.  In my younger years, I use to think of Cupid when I thought of this poem.  Cupid is a god of Roman mythology and the son of Venus.  He is a winged god equipped with a bow and arrows and flies around shooting arrows into humans causing them to be filled with uncontrollable desire.  Desire to many, means love.  So, some refer to falling in love as being a victim of  one of Cupid’s arrows.  Cupid has become a very popular symbol of  Valentine's Day and though neither one of them have a connection to one another, they both represent love.
Valentine’s day actually started out being a religious celebration to honor saints that were named Valentine.  The celebration of Saint Valentines day did not have any romantic connotations until Chaucer’s poetry about Valentines in the 14th century.  What started out as gifted poetry has now turned into many different fashionable gifts.  The most popular gift being a heart shaped box of chocolates.  Regardless of the gift, many believe Valentine’s Day to be the most romantic day of the year.
