Saint Valentine's Day

It all began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus.  Many martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belong to the day of February 14th.    A popular hagiographical account of this day involves a Saint Valentine of Rome and states that the saint was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman empire.

According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer.  Before is his execution, he wrote the jailer’s daughter a letter signed “Your Valentine”.

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.  18th century England evolved it into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering candy, and sending greeting cards, which became known as “valentines".  "Valentines" were given to children to ward off Saint Valentine’s Malady.  In the 18th century, handwritten valentines were replaced by manufactured ones.
