Wedding Fairy

It has been a very long time since I visited my blog.  Now, I am posting new updates about my shop on ETSY called Dezy's Doll Designs.  The shop is named after my granddaughter Destiny, who was once an American Girl Fan.  Now that she has become a teenager, she no longer plays with dolls, but the shop will remain named after her.

I recently had a request for a custom order and really enjoyed making it.  I will call it a wedding Fairy.  I wanted to share this with you.  This was an unusual order request and such a great idea for
an original outfit.

The whole outfit is handcrafted.  Anyone wanting instructions on how I made the wings, please leave me a note with an email address and I will get back to you as soon as possible.  The wings were the easiest to make believe it or not.  Christmas is just around the corner and now is the time to get your sewing talents in gear for the loved ones.

Above is a picture of the shoes that I made to go with the outfit.

I currently have my schedule open and I am accepting new custom orders.

Thank you for stopping by my blog.

European Medieval Renaissance Maiden Outfit

In European history, the Middle Ages, or Medieval period, lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery. The Middle Ages is the middle period of the three traditional divisions of Western history: Antiquity, Medieval period, and Modern period. The Medieval period is itself subdivided into the Early, the High, and the Late Middle Ages.

Everyday lives of medieval peasants were extremely harsh as the majority of them worked as farmers.  They lived in small dwellings called cruck and were comprised of a wooden frame plastered with mud, straw and manure.  The dwellings had a thatched roof and the floor was lined with straw.

Their dress was plain and simple, only dressing up during one of their festival days.  Since they had to work the fields they needed durable layered clothing.

Peasant outfit

The first layer of clothing was a chemise.  The chemise was made mainly from muslin because it was washed the most.  It was made out of white colored material, because it was often bleached and boiled to remove the soil.  The function of the chemise was to protect the outer clothing from body perspiration.  Though the typical color was white, I have chosen to do mine in lavender and instead of muslin, I have used eyelet cotton material.  The chemise slips on and off the body.  It has an elastic neckline and the sleeves have an elastic hem.

Next layer of clothing is the skirt.  The skirt is made of quality cotton in a patchwork design.  Main colors are lime, purple and beige.  The skirt is trimmed with lavender lace at the hemline.  The skirt has a suspender sewn into the waist line for holding up the hemline of the skirt.  The suspender is made from ribbed ribbon and has a gold imitation gold leaf toggle closure.  Though peasants often wore more than one skirt, my outfit only features one skirt.

The last layer is a corset.  It is made from quality cotton.  The print is purple and lavender flowers.  It has eyelet and ribbon trim down the front.  It is completely lined and fastens in the back with velcro.

Saint Valentine's Day

It all began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus.  Many martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belong to the day of February 14th.    A popular hagiographical account of this day involves a Saint Valentine of Rome and states that the saint was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman empire.

According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer.  Before is his execution, he wrote the jailer’s daughter a letter signed “Your Valentine”.

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.  18th century England evolved it into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering candy, and sending greeting cards, which became known as “valentines".  "Valentines" were given to children to ward off Saint Valentine’s Malady.  In the 18th century, handwritten valentines were replaced by manufactured ones.

If you are looking for the perfect Valentine card for that special someone in your life, you may want to visit a shop called Taylormadecards4u.  She makes and sells original greeting cards for all occasions.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD FOR AMERICAN GIRL 18 INCH DOLLS

This is my latest creation.  I tend to get so engrossed in these projects they seem to end up taking me days to complete.  I did a lot of research on this one, just like I did on the pirate outfit I created.  I found out a lot of interesting facts about the Little Miss.  It seems this folk tale originated in the french 10th century.  It has been filtered down through the centuries and the story line has changed depending on who is interpreting the bones of the folk tale.  The fairy tale I remember reading to my children was by the Grimm Brothers, but they were not the first to adapt this tale and make a story out of it.  If you are interested in reading the true facts about Little Red, Wikipedia has a lot of interesting facts.

Here is a picture of my completed project and my next project is a day dress for Caroline to go marketing in.  After that, I am going to work on Little Bo Peep.

Do you have a favorite doll or stuffed animal that you cannot find clothes for.  Let me know.  I do custom orders and I usually charge much less than my competitors.  I have several years
of sewing experience.  I have sewn commercially and privately.  I can usually make
almost anything and just need a few measurements.

I currently have 3 dresses listed on Ebay for a starting price of $0.99, which is below cost.  Though the price is cheap, they still have nice quality.  I provided a link for you below the picture.  They
will be on Ebay for 5 days.  I hope to have more after I rummage through all of my inventory.

Thanks for stopping by.  Comments are always welcome here.

PIRATES/BUCCANEERS-HISTORICAL CLOTHING FOR AMERICAN GIRL 18 INCH DOLLS

About 1630, some Frenchmen who were driven away from the island of Hispaniola fled to nearby Tortuga.  The Spaniards tried to drive them out of Tortuga, but the buccaneers were joined by many other French, Dutch, and English and turned to piracy against the Spanish shipping, generally using small craft to attack galleons in the vicinity of the Windward Passage.  Finally they became so strong that they even sailed to the mainland of Spanish American and sacked cities.  This info is provided by Wikipedia.

The buccaneers were pirates who attacked Spanish shipping in the Caribbean Sea during the 17th century.  The term buccaneer is now used generally as a synonym for pirate.  Originally, buccaneer crew were larger, more apt to attack coastal cities, and more localized to the Caribbean than later pirate crews who sailed to the Indian Ocean on the Pirate Round in the late 17th century.

The only pirate I can remember from my childhood is "Sir Frances Drake".  I watched a movie centered around him when I was in my preteens.  I have been fascinated with them since.  In fact, I love all swashbuckling movies such as the Pirates of the Caribbean, 3 Musketeers, etc.

This was the inspiration for my latest creation.  I spent this past week researching, designing, and sewing to come up with my version of the perfect Pirate/Buccaneer outfit.  I did borrow and inspiration from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and made a headdress similar to the one for Jack Sparrow and decided on a cavalier styled hat instead of the basic pirate hat.  I think the Cavalier hats are more appealing.  To me, anyway.

This outfit took so long to make, I was unable to get started on my Red Riding Hood outfit, so that is my next project.

Thanks for stopping by.  Let me know what you think about my creation.  Comments are always welcome.  No advertising please.
